Yonkers is actively implementing initiatives to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability. The city’s comprehensive Climate Action Plan aims to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, with a goal of achieving zero emissions by 2050. This plan focuses on areas such as jobs and economy, resilience and environment, waste and materials, energy and buildings, and transportation.
To support sustainable transportation, Yonkers has expanded its network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Locations like Buena Vista and the Government Center Garage now feature numerous new EV charging stations, with plans to have 125 charging ports available upon completion.
In education, the Justice Sonia Sotomayor School incorporates sustainable features, including an all-electric heat pump system, solar panels, a partial green roof, and energy-efficient designs. These elements contribute to a healthier environment for students and staff.
Community organizations play a vital role in Yonkers’ environmental efforts. The Beczak Environmental Education Center engages residents through educational programs and hands-on experiences, fostering a deeper connection to the Hudson River and its ecosystems. Additionally, the “Throwing Shade on Extreme Heat” initiative, a collaboration between Groundwork Hudson Valley and the Hudson River Museum, addresses extreme heat challenges in Southwest Yonkers through community-driven solutions and innovative environmental strategies.
These collective efforts demonstrate Yonkers’ dedication to creating a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
