In the wake of a significant apartment fire on School Street, the Yonkers community has come together to support the affected families. The fire, which occurred on a Friday night, spread to several buildings and displaced dozens of residents. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
The Community Closet at the Yonkers Police Athletic League (PAL) has been instrumental in providing assistance. Located at 127 North Broadway, the PAL opened its doors to offer clothing and essential items to those impacted. Families were invited to select up to 14 items, including coats, to help them through this challenging time.
Marisol Mancebo, executive director of the Yonkers PAL, emphasized the community’s commitment: “We have clothes for all ages, and now we’re going to pull out a lot of toys so the kids can take some toys home. We understand they also lost all of their Christmas gifts. We are here today to support those families.”
Residents affected by the fire are encouraged to contact the Yonkers PAL at 914-377-7381. For those unable to visit in person, arrangements can be made for item delivery. Additionally, the PAL is accepting donations of new clothing, hygiene products, baby supplies, and pet food to further assist the displaced families.
City officials have also stepped in to coordinate relief efforts. A donation drive is underway at Yonkers City Hall, where community members can drop off essential items. The drive aims to provide immediate relief and support to those who have lost their homes and belongings.
Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy highlighted the community’s resilience: “When it’s one of our own, we stick together and we band together to help those in need.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. In the meantime, the collective efforts of Yonkers residents, local organizations, and city officials underscore the city’s strong sense of community and dedication to supporting neighbors in times of need.
