Living in Yonkers means more than just getting by—it’s about thriving. Whether you’re chasing physical goals, seeking mental calm, or looking to build strength, our community has resources to support you. Here’s a guide to staying well—body and mind.
Get Moving Outdoors & in Community Spaces
You don’t need fancy equipment to stay active—Yonkers’ parks bring fitness right to your doorstep. 9 city parks now include outdoor gym equipment, making workouts accessible without membership fees. Parks like Barton, Columbus, Stefanik, and Trevor let you mix cardio, strength, and stretching in fresh air.
If classes are more your style, Yonkers offers group fitness programs through its Parks & Recreation department. Activities such as dance-fitness fusion, Zumba, strength training, and gentle movement for older adults give you variety, community, and an instructor to keep you driven.
Finding Mental Health Care That Fits
Mental health care can feel intimidating—but Yonkers has many strong providers willing to meet you where you are. Saint Joseph’s Medical Center offers outpatient therapy and a full inpatient psychiatric unit for adults, plus crisis support when needed.
For ongoing support—especially for families and children—the Yonkers Family Mental Health Clinic (run by WJCS) provides talk therapy, care coordination, and support in dealing with life stressors. Satellite clinics at places like Hudson River Health Care make care more reachable.
Andrus adds school-based mental health services, meaning youth can get assistance in a place that’s part of their daily routine, lessening the weight of stigma or logistical challenges.
Support Systems and Wellness Alternatives
Stress comes in many forms—but you don’t have to carry it alone. The Community Mental Health Promotion and Support (COMHPS) program holds regular wellness sessions at the Will Library, offering brief counseling, emotional support, resource referrals, and educational talks. These free and bilingual services are great for checking in with your wellbeing.
One Paso™, a locally-grown nonprofit, leans into community healing. Through culture, conversation, and movement, they help normalize mental health care—especially for Latinx communities and youth. It’s safe space work that listens deeply and acts creatively.
Tips for Combining Movement & Mental Wellness
- Start small—5-minute walks, light stretching, breathing breaks during the day have cumulative effects.
- Mix physical activity with mindfulness—things like yoga, tai chi, or meditation help both stress levels and core strength.
- Set realistic goals—one strength session, or two workouts per week, is sustainable and builds confidence.
- Lean into what energizes you—dancing, park play, music, art or being around people. If it feels good, you’re more likely to stick with it.
Yonkers isn’t just a place where we live—it’s a place where we can grow stronger, together. Reach out, move often, lean on our network. Your health— mental and physical—is worth cultivating.
